Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety is a normal response to stress or danger. At times it is helpful because it can help prepare the body for action, and it can improve performance in a range of situations. Anxiety becomes a problem when it is experienced intensely and it persistently interferes with a person’s daily life.

Depression and anxiety commonly occur together. Not everybody who is anxious is depressed, but most depressed patients have some symptoms of anxiety.

Anxiety Symptoms

Anxiety can be experienced in a number of different ways.

Physical symptoms Racing heart beat (palpitations); Chest tightness; Breathing fast, feeling short of breath or finding it hard to “get breath”; Dry mouth, butterflies in the stomach, feeling sick. Sweating; Tremor; An urge to pass urine. Psychological symptoms Inner tension; Fear of losing control; Agitation; Dread that something catastrophic is going to happen, such as a blackout, seizure, heart attack or death; Feelings of detachment, as if being trapped in a bubble separate from the world; Irritability. What types of anxiety disorders

There are a number of “types” of anxiety disorders. They tend to overlap considerably and it is not uncommon for people to have features of several of the disorders.

Panic disorder

In panic disorder, repeated panic attacks occur unpredictably and often without obvious causes. The attacks consist of severe anxiety with physical and psychological symptoms.

Psychological symptoms typically include dread (particularly of extreme events such as dying), having a seizure, losing control or “going mad”.

Physical symptoms can include any of the general symptoms of anxiety described above and often the hyperventilation syndrome.

To the sufferer, the attacks feel as if they are going on for a long time, but actually they tend to last only a few minutes, and at their longest they last around an hour. Panic disorder is common in depression, GAD or agoraphobia.

By

Dr.(Mrs).KirubaCharles

Ms.V.ArulSelvi

Anxiety is often triggered by stress in our live. Many children usually suffer from exam anxiety. Have you noticed your child biting his nails a little too much during his exams? Or may be eating too much? The reason is “Exam anxiety”. Exams totally frighten children and they start worrying too much. Anxiety is probably one of the most researched human traits in recent years. It is excessive worry about upcoming exams which is one of the types of state anxiety affects children in every field of life, whenever students of all ages have to be evaluated, assessed, and graded with regard to their abilities, achievements, or interests. This anxiety causes the student to perform badly and it interferes with normal studies. Highly anxious children are characterized by acquired habits and attitudes that involve negative self-perceptions and expectations. These self-deprecating habits and attitudes dispose anxious children to experience fear and heightened physiological activity in situations such as examinations in which they are being evaluated, and influence the manner in which they interpret and respond to events in the environment. Students, who have developed a proper attitude to learning, memory and study and learned good techniques and habits, need not have to worry about stress and anxiety. Anxiety associated stress will cause great loss of memory and memory blocks during examinations. Parents should encourage children to be confident and overcome their worries and ensure them that they can perform well. In this article, we can understand the causes of anxiety and how good dieting help children to come out from anxiety. Exam anxiety can be caused by following reasons:

Most students have experienced or are simply afraid of “blanking out” on an exam. The inability to perform in an exam can lead to “anticipatory anxiety”. The truth is worrying about how anxiety might affect them is worse than anxiety itself. Because this anticipatory anxiety can build up as the exam approaches and it will interfere in the student’s ability to adequately prepare for the exam.
When a student fails to adequately prepare for an exam, this will definitely contribute to exam anxiety. Lack of proper time management, poor study skills and lack of proper organization can lead to a feeling of being overwhelmed.
Some students who are usually forced to cram for an exam at the last minute usually do not feel as confident as those that have been able to cover all their material through following a structured plan for studying.
The lack of self confidence, the fear of failure and other negative thought processes will also contribute to exam anxiety.
Studies have shown that exam anxiety may also have genetic component.
If a student sees his or self-esteem closely tied to the outcome of his or her academic work, the result can be pretty bad! In cases like these, the student may actually spend more of his or her time worrying about the exam than actually reading for it.
Imbalanced diet with inadequate nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids and folic acids.

Symptoms of exam anxiety

a) Emotional symptoms – Extreme feelings of helplessness, fear, anger, disappointment. In some cases uncontrollable crying or laughing, worry,

Frustration, discouragement, depression, panic and hopelessness.

b) Cognitive symptoms – “going blank” as soon as the question paper arrives, finding it very difficult to concentrate, racing thoughts, speaking ill of oneself, finding it difficult to organize ones thoughts and making comparisons of oneself with others. Scattered attention, irrational thoughts, self-defeating thoughts, task-disruptive daydreaming and self-abusing thoughts.

c) Physical symptoms – Feelings of nausea, diarrhea, headaches, changes in the body temperature, dizziness, shortness of breath, fainting, dry mouth, tight muscles, insomnia, upset stomach, unable to eat, increased perspiration, sweaty palms, increased heart rate and more frequent urination

d) Behavioral symptoms – pacing back and forth, fidgeting, substance abuse, social withdrawal, avoidance of friends and family, unusual irritability with others, procrastination through increased socializing, tense movements, losing focus of actions, less coordinated movements, nail biting and “escaping” behaviours.

Anxiety can be treated medically with psychological counseling. In some cases, anxiety may be treated at home, without a doctor’s supervision. In such cases, parenting help is one of the most crucial things that can help children take the edge off their stress and anxiety. This can be possible by keeping them in good diet and teaching them about anxiety management techniques. Lifestyle issues are main contributing factors such as inadequate rest, poor nutrition, too many stimulants, insufficient exercise, not scheduling available time, not prioritizing commitments. However, balanced nutrition is essential to maintain overall good health and to manage stress and anxiety as well. When children are going through a period of stress, they need more of all nutrients. If they are lacking with nutrients, their body will not be equipped to handle exam anxiety effectively. This article highlights the anti-anxiety diet to help children cope up with exam stress and anxiety.

Take a multivitamin and mineral supplement: Studies have shown that the body depletes its stores of nutrients when under stress and anxiety, mainly protein and vitamins B, C and A. So, it is good to provide orange juice, squash, potatoes, apricots, limes, bananas, avocados, tomatoes, and peaches to those who are under prolonged stress. Mostly whole (unprocessed) foods will help children get away from anxiety. Because refined, white flour and processed foods starve the body of B vitamins and weaken the body, hence promote feelings of anxiety. It is important to note that sweet foods and products are especially harmful, since their digestion causes a dramatic drop in blood sugar which can be experienced as apprehensive anxiety.

Cut out caffeine: One of the more distressing effects of anxiety is insomnia, which is the inability to fall asleep or to remain asleep. It is important to regain regular sleep patterns as lack of sleep can lead to disturbing symptoms of anxiety. But Caffeine causes a fight-or- flight response in our body which also inhibits sleep if too much is ingested. It is strongly recommended to sleep well before an exam as last minute studies only add to confusion and stress level. So drinking coffee during exam time should be strictly avoided and replaced with health drinks.

The following food chart will help parents to know about the anti- anxiety foods. Changes in the diet will help beating anxiety.

Bed time: Health drinks with skimmed milk

Eat complex carbohydrates: During periods of anxiety the body diverts blood from various parts of the body to the muscle tissues in order to supply them with the oxygen needed by them. One of the main areas where blood is used most is around the digestive tract. Blood is sent there to absorb nutrients from the food we eat. As blood is diverted away from the stomach during anxiety, the digestion slows and the muscles around the stomach can become knotted. This can cause indigestion, heartburn and diarrhea or constipation. Taking a healthy, whole foods diet containing fresh vegetables and fruits, nuts and whole grains are the best insurance against attacks of anxiety. Parents should pay attention to intake of fruits and vegetables which are best eaten raw, such as in a salad state as many vitamins and the enzymes are destroyed by cooking. The blood vessels and nerves are originating in the neck and shoulders and routed across the head to the face. When the body is under stress these areas of the body are usually the first to become tense. It is the duty to the parents to develop a healthy and confident attitude towards exams to their children. Oats are important for the nervous system.

Take plenty of fruits: Anxiety can be reduced by changing the food habits and diet. Fruit plays an important role in our diet. Fruit is known to be human’s natural diet. Tryptophan an amino acids helps our brain produce chemicals that improve mood and have a relaxing effect. Milk, bananas, oats, soy, poultry, cheese, nuts, peanut butter and sesame seeds are good sources of tryptophan. It is important to reduce consuming animal foods.

High-protein foods elevate brain levels of dopamine and norepinephrine which are associated with higher levels of anxiety and stress. Salt increases the blood pressure, deplete adrenal glands, and causes emotional instability. It is better to add a salt substitute that has potassium rather than sodium. Avoid junk foods high in salt such as bacon, pickles, sausage, etc.

Stay well-hydrated: Sweating is a normal bodily reaction and is designed to reduce the body temperature. As the body heats up, sweat is released onto it through sweat glands. As the sweat evaporates it takes heat with it, cooling the body. During periods of anxiety the body is preparing itself for either flight or fight and releases sweat to cool the impending exertions. As the anxiety subsides sweat levels return to normal. So it is also important to include fruit juices such as orange juice, lime juice, grape juice, pomegranate juice, tender coconut water in our diet.

Conclusion: Physical health will have a direct influence on our emotional wellness. Since anxiety is a normal reaction to stress, it will interrupt with a tense situation in the working place and studies. When anxiety becomes an excessive, the irrational dread will occupy our life. It will soon become a disabling disorder for us. Although tension and daily stresses are unavoidable, we can relieve and manage stress better by adding the right anti anxiety foods in our diet.

Put another way, social anxiety is the fear and anxiety of being judged and evaluated negatively by other people, leading to feelings of inadequacy, embarrassment, humiliation, and depression. If a person usually becomes anxious in social situations, but seems fine when they are alone, then “social anxiety” may be the problem.

Rated as the third largest psychological disorder in the United States, social anxiety disorder or social phobia, is more common an issue for many people than previously known. No one should feel inadequate or alone if suffering from this condition, as millions of people across the world face this traumatic problem everyday of their lives. Someone may face one, some or all of the common conditions associated with social phobia or from a more generalized social phobia. With the right social anxiety disorder treatment these phobias can be overcome.

If searching for a natural cure, Panic Away and the Panic Away One Move Technique would be your solution. Before spending money on expensive medications, various books or even psychiatrist appointments, panic away is a must look option.

In further explanation and understanding of social anxiety the following should be understood. A specific social phobia would be the fear of speaking in front of groups, whereas generalized social anxiety indicates that the person is anxious, nervous, and uncomfortable in almost all (or the majority of) social situations.

Social Anxiety Disorder Symptoms:
Meeting new people
Fear of criticism or being teased
Drawing attention; being center of attention
Feeling like you are being watched while doing something or fearing you may be watched
Intimated by people of authority
Staying away from social situations with strangers
Being reserved at parties and fearing starting small talk with others
Performing on stage
Public speaking
Being called on in class
Going on a date

These are some of the more common symptoms associated with social anxiety disorder, but not a complete list.

What you may feel physically when facing social anxiety?

Racing heart
Intense feelings of fear
Dry throat and mouth
Red or flush face
Difficulty swallowing
Muscle stiffness or twitching
Trembling
Overwhelming, constant feeling of anxiety

People with social anxiety disorder know that their anxiety is irrational and does not make “head” sense. Nevertheless, “knowing” something is never the same as “believing” and “feeling” something. Thus, in people with social anxiety, thoughts and feelings of anxiety persist and show no signs of going away.

There are treatments available for social anxiety, as well as the other anxiety problems. To read or hear that someone with social phobia is just going to “learn to live with it”, is completely ridiculous. No one has to live with this condition, there is help available.

A natural program such as panic away, teaches you how to break the fear of the anxiety cycle, which then may lead to frequent panic attacks. The technique does this by teaching you to reverse your mental state, from the irrational to the rational part of the brain. The irrational part takes over upon the uprising of an anxiety causing situation. You can switch your brain back to the rational side, preventing the attack from happening and controlling your anxiety.

Social Anxiety Disorder Treatment

Getting over social anxiety disorder is not an easy task; yet many thousands have already done it. While you’re in the middle of the problem, it feels as though you’ll never ever get better. Life is just one stomach turning anxiety problem after another. This can be stopped, controlled, and reduced in a relatively short period of time. You must find an established, reputable and continually supportive program that can help your social phobia. Panic Away is just that program.

The most important elements in conquering social phobia are:

An understanding and awareness of the problem.
A commitment to carry through the issues even when it seems difficult.
Practice, practice, practice to get that information deep down into your brain so that it becomes automatic.
Participation in supportive, understanding groups in which they help you work on problems that cause you anxiety in the real world.
Being with others that have similar phobias, but have used specific strategies to conquer there anxiety causing situations.

You may have a need to take social anxiety disorder medication, but before you do consider a more natural remedy such as Panic Away.

Social Anxiety Disorder Medication

Medication is sometimes used to relieve the symptoms of social anxiety, but it’s not a cure for social anxiety disorder or social phobia. If you stop taking medication, your symptoms will probably return full force. Medication is considered most helpful when used in addition to therapy and other self-help techniques that address the root cause of social anxiety disorder.

Types of medication used to treat social anxiety disorder (social phobia):

Beta blockers – Beta blockers are used for relieving performance anxiety. They work by blocking the flow of adrenaline that occurs when you’re anxious. While beta blockers don’t affect the emotional symptoms of anxiety, they can control physical symptoms such as shaking hands or voice, sweating, and rapid heartbeat.
Antidepressants – Antidepressants can be helpful when social anxiety disorder is severe and debilitating. Three specific antidepressants—Paxil treatment, Effexor, and Zoloft—have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of social phobia.
Benzodiazepines – Benzodiazepines are fast-acting anti-anxiety medications. However, they are sedating and addictive, so they are typically prescribed only when other medications for social phobia have not worked.

Detailed description of these medications: Helpguide.org

The bottom line is this. If you’ve tried every social anxiety disorder treatment around or are just starting to look for solutions, you need a proven method. I understand that not every option works for every person, but panic away has helped over 60,000 people and can help you too.

Panic Away is an effective, proven, depression treatment. Stop feeling depressed over your social anxiety which makes you even more reserved and trapped in your own mind. This course is also an alternative panic disorder treatment, using all natural techniques, aiding in the dissolving of your anxieties which lead to recurring panic attacks.

The One Move Technique taught, will also serve as an agoraphobia treatment and generalized anxiety disorder treatment. Stop the endless days of self judgment, negative projective thoughts you perceive others are thinking, and start experiencing the world around you.

This disorder is generally experienced by individuals under prolonged stress or deep agony, to later graduate into anxiety attacks. However, it is not too difficult to overcome anxiety if you follow a healthy lifestyle and subjugate the factors responsible for triggering anxiety.

Anxiety attacks is one of the most difficult conditions one can experience, with sudden occurrences of intense and irresistible fear triggered off for no evident reasons whatsoever. Case study and analysis of a large number of anxiety related cases has revealed that anxiety cure is not only about plummeting general anxiety levels; in actual anxiety attack help is more about going in depth into the very heart of the matter.

Prescription medicines are one of the most reliable and quick heal Social Anxiety Treatment. Although they make an immediate impact on the anxiety disorder condition, it also comes with its fair share of side-effects, which in some cases might aggravate the present situation. They are effective in cases which require instant relief; however, they are not at all recommended for long-term treatment.

Anxiety Symptoms

There also many holistic health professionals that make strong claims that ongoing high anxiety is having an affect on more than just our relationships and finances, they assert that it may also be causing physical ailments as well. Here we’re not talking just about sweaty palms, dry mouth, or dizziness, these health professionals claim high levels of chronic anxiety may cause serious health problems eventually.

Social Anxiety Disorder is a social phobia that is a fear of public humiliation and by being judged by people with a negative attitude. Examples of this are possibly a fear of being intimate or if a performer gets severe stress from stage fright. This can have a serious affect on the person by becoming reclusive and avoids appearing in the public reaching critical circumtstances that leaves having a normal life almost impossible.

There are many different symptoms that may be experienced if a person suffers from Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Unfortunately, with all of the symptoms that may plague an individual, overcoming the anxiety experienced as a result of those symptoms often reaches such a high level that standard anxiety relief techniques are ineffective. These symptoms include the following:

Anxiety disorders appear for specific reasons, and have definite underlying reasons why they persist. When the underlying reasons are properly addressed, anxiety disorders can disappear forever. Anxiety disorders persist, only because the underlying reasons are not addressed.

Anxiety is a cognitive phenomenon and is usually measured by questionnaire instruments. These questionnaires are sometimes accompanied by physiological measures that are associated with heightened arousal/anxiety (e.g., heart rate, blood pressure, skin conductance, muscle tension). Anxiety is the feeling of worry, apprehension, fear and/or panic in response to situations which seem overwhelming, threatening, unsafe or uncomfortable.

Anxiety is one of the most common yet underdiagnosed mental health problems of Americans; as many as 20% of people seeking primary care have symptoms of treatable anxiety disorders. Untreated anxiety Increases costly visits to urgent care.

If you or someone you know regularly experiences any of these physical anxiety attack symptoms then it is absolutely critical that you get your anxiety attack disorder correctly diagnosed so that you can work towards understanding why these physical anxiety attack symptoms are occurring and what you can do to prevent these anxiety attack physical symptoms occurring in the future.

This article discusses the perhaps little known amino acid L-Theanine as a natural remedy for anxiety relief.

L-Theanine is a unique free form amino acid found only in the tea plant and in the mushrooms Xerocomus badius and certain species of genus Camellia, C. japonica and C. sasanqua.

Treatment:

Physical Exercise. Because anxiety is the body’s response for fight or flight – physical exercise is a very good way of burning the adrenaline off. It improves our physical well-being and helps to restore balance.

Eat a healthy, balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

Whatever treatment is decided upon based on advice from your medical practitioner and adviser, by following a course of treatment that works best on your anxiety you stand a good chance of being in control of your life once more and truly in the end that’s all that matters.

Imagine finding the anxiety cure that removes all anxiety from your body. Imagine being perfectly calm under all circumstances. Nothing stirs you. No matter what comes along, you do not react. Your heart doesn’t speed up. Your mind doesn’t race. Your muscles don’t tense.

When a doctor is trying to determine the causes of a patient’s anxiety attacks, he will assess environmental issues, traits in the person’s personality, the patient’s brain chemistry, any past traumas and the family medical history. Firstly, the environmental issues may include poverty, childhood/parental separation, overly strict parents, overly critical parents, excessive family conflicts, fearful parents, anxious parents and a lacking support system.

Something as simple as learning how to change your patterns of breathing can be of great benefit to reducing the effects of your anxiety. Hyperventilation is a key physiological problem which results in the body becoming over-saturated with oxygen and thus panic-stricken.

Particularly if you are new to anxiety and its many symptoms, it can be very confronting, confusing and most of all frightening. The effects of anxiety are often trivialized by those who have never experienced an attack, it is not uncommon for people to tell you that although the symptoms are unpleasant they are completely harmless and should be disregarded.

Anxiety and Related Disorders

If you’re sitting in a tornado shelter feeling apprehension about a tornado warning on the radio, then you probably have a normal fear response to your circumstances. If you’re sitting in there on a clear day, trembling, sweating and feeling doomed, then you probably have an anxiety disorder. Webster’s Dictionary defines anxiety as “An abnormal and overwhelming sense of apprehension and fear with physiological signs such as shortness of breath, a rapid pulse, or chest pain.” Anxiety Disorders are one of the most common psychiatric conditions, affecting fifteen to twenty per cent of the general population.

The first order of business for a physician evaluating anxiety is to determine as accurately as possible the patient’s complete state of health. At least one-third of patients with an underlying organic disorder present with anxiety symptoms. These could include too much thyroid hormone, problems with the adrenal glands, an unrecognized heart disorder, or diabetes. Treatment of the underlying medical problem thereby becomes the primary treatment for the anxiety.

The second order of business is to determine if a patient is putting something into their body which is causing the anxiety. This could include alcohol, which is a frequent cause of a cycle of anxiety. Other substances which could cause anxiety would be stimulants like diet pills, amphetamines or cocaine. Finally, some prescription drugs do not mix well together, especially when they are broken down by the same enzymes in the liver, and may cause severe anxiety. There are certain herbal remedies such as yohimbine (a purported male enhancer), which in some individuals, can cause anxiety. Elimination of these substances is the treatment for this type of anxiety, so a patient needs to be forthright about all substances and prescriptions which he is taking.

A type of primary anxiety disorder is the panic attack. This is usually unexpected, peaks in about ten minutes and usually lasts less than an hour. It is characterized by a feeling of losing control or going crazy, trembling or shaking, profuse sweating or chills or hot flashes, rapid heart rate, and a sense of not being able to catch one’s breath. It may be associated with agoraphobia, which is a fear of being trapped or unable to escape. (Agoraphobia can occur by itself, and thus be considered as another form of primary anxiety.)

There is another form of anxiety which most often begins in childhood. It is the fear of separation from an important attachment figure, for example a parent. This leads to a form of anxiety called separation anxiety which can occur at later times in life when one is faced with losing another attachment figure.

Some anxiety sufferers have an inordinate fear of humiliation in social or performance situations. Once again it is the physical symptoms which define the condition. One could be tormented by flushing (or blushing), rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, and/or a sense of doom. If it is a fear of social situations it is called Social Anxiety or phobia; fear of performance humiliation is called Performance Anxiety.

Some anxiety sufferers can have symptoms brought on by a specific object or situation. These are called the various and sundry phobias. It might be the fear of heights, fear of crossing a bridge, fear of spiders or germs. Again it is the intense emotional and physical symptoms which make this form of anxiety so disabling.

Another form of anxiety is the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. A person suffering from this may perform certain rituals to allay the anxiety. This could include excessive hand-washing, not stepping on cracks in the sidewalk, or repetitively locking and relocking a door. Jack Nicholson played an Obsessive-Compulsive in a movie a few years ago (Melvin Udall in “As Good As It Gets”), which very poignantly portrayed the interpersonal difficulties which can occur secondary to this condition. Dustin Hoffman’s “Rain Man” portrayed a Tourette’s Syndrome/Autistic patient’s extreme dependence on rituals to alleviate mounting anxiety.

If a person has six months or more of constant generalized anxiety and excessive worry with the physical and emotional repercussions of anxiety, this is called Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Sometimes this particular spectrum of symptoms can be secondary to a mood disorder such as depression or manic-depression. In this latter case treatment would be for the mood disorder.

There is an anxiety disorder which occurs after a person has endured a shocking situation in which he has faced the possibility of his own death. We see this in soldiers who have been traumatized on the battlefield. It can occur after a terrible accident or a natural disaster. The person has panic attacks and vivid nightmares. This type of anxiety is called Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The VA Hospital system has developed an extensive body of knowledge about this disorder and various specific techniques for treating it. Adjustment Disorder is a much less intense form of anxiety than PTSD. In this situation, an individual develops anxiety secondary to a new situation such as a new job or a different family arrangement.

Treatment of anxiety usually involves both psychological and medical treatment. Identifying sources of anxiety and likewise identifying physical symptoms can eliminate some of the dread one has for intermittent anxiety. Sometimes with phobias there can be a supportive desensitization which can help alleviate symptoms. Medications can include anti-anxiety agents such as diazepam or clonazepam, but care has to be taken to avoid medication dependency. The SSRI antidepressants like fluoxetine have anti-anxiety properties as well. Tricyclic antidepressants like clomipramine can be used to treat anxiety but have a greater incidence of side-effects.

Dr. Laurusonis was conferred his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1983 and has been actively taking care of patients since completing his Internal Medicine residency in 1987 in the Garden State of New Jersey. Dr. Laurusonis has been licensed in four states but ultimately chose to permanently relocate to Georgia with his family and begin a private practice. Through his extensive experience in Internal Medicine, as well as in Emergency Rooms throughout the United States, Dr. Laurusonis saw how traditional Emergency Rooms were often overwhelmed by patients suffering medical conditions that were urgent but may not need the traditional “Level I Trauma Center”. Patients often waited six to twelve hours to be seen by a physician, were riddled with thousands of dollars in medical bills, and were generally unhappy with the system.

Dr. Laurusonis decided to open an Urgent Care Center instead of a 9-5 doctor’s office. Through the last fifteen years he has received accolades from the community and his patients. He has expanded his practice to include many cosmetic therapies that have previously been treated with painful and extensive plastic surgery. He has been invited to the White House numerous times, has been named Physician of the Year, as seen in the Wall Street Journal, and has served as Honorary Co-Chairman on the Congressional Physicians Advisory Board

Dr. Laurusonis and his practice, Doctors Medical Center, is open 7 days a week from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm offering such services as lab, x-ray, EKGs, aesthetics (Botox, dermabrasion, sclerotheraby and veins etc.), cold/flu, sore throats, fractures, sprains, lacerations, GYN, Pediatrics, Anxiety/Insomnia/Depression Treatment, skin tag/mole removal, veins, allergies, asthma, physicals–just to name a few. Dr. Laurusonis welcomes you to either make an appointment or just walk-in to see him. Dr. Laurusonis will take the time to speak with you about your concerns–no problem is too big or too small. If you need additional services we have specialist referrals available or we can refer you to the neighborhood hospital emergency room. Give Doctors Medical Center a call–Dr. Laurusonis will be happy to speak with you.

It serves an important basic survival function: Anxiety is an alarm system that is activated whenever a person perceives danger or threat.
When the body and mind react to danger or threat, a person feels physical sensations of anxiety — things like a faster heartbeat and breathing, tense muscles, sweaty palms, a queasy stomach, and trembling hands or legs. These sensations are part of the body’s fight flight response.

They are caused by a rush of adrenaline and other chemicals that prepare the body to make a quick getaway from danger. They can be mild or extreme.

The fight-flight response happens instantly when a person senses a threat. It takes a few seconds longer for the thinking part of the brain (the cortex) to process the situation and evaluate whether the threat is real, and if so, how to handle it. If the cortex sends the all-clear signal, the fight-flight response is deactivated and the nervous system can relax.

If the mind reasons that a threat might last, feelings of anxiety might linger, keeping the person alert. Physical sensations such as rapid, shallow breathing; a pounding heart; tense muscles; and sweaty palms might continue, too.

Normal Anxiety Everyone experiences feelings of anxiety from time to time. Anxiety can be described as a sense of uneasiness, nervousness, worry, fear, or dread of what’s about to happen or what might happen. While fear is the emotion we feel in the presence of threat, anxiety is a sense of anticipated danger, trouble, or threat.

Feelings of anxiety can be mild or intense (or anywhere in between), depending on the person and the situation. Mild anxiety can feel like a sense of uneasiness or nervousness. More intense anxiety can feel like fear, dread, or panic. Worrying and feelings of tension and stress are forms of anxiety. So are stage fright and the shyness that can come with meeting new people.

It’s natural for new, unfamiliar, or challenging situations to prompt feelings of anxiety or nervousness. Facing an important test, a big date, or a major class presentation can trigger normal anxiety. Although these situations don’t actually threaten a person’s safety, they can cause someone to feel “threatened” by potential embarrassment, worry about making a mistake, fitting in, stumbling over words, being accepted or rejected, or losing pride. Physical sensations — such as a pounding heart, sweaty hands, or a nervous stomach — can be part of normal anxiety, too.

Because anxiety makes a person alert, focused, and ready to head off potential problems, a little anxiety can help us do our best in situations that involve performance. But anxiety that’s too strong can interfere with doing our best. Too much anxiety can cause a person to feel overwhelmed, tongue-tied, or unable to do what they need to do.

Anxiety Disorders Anxiety disorders are mental health conditions that involve excessive amounts of anxiety, fear, nervousness, worry, or dread. Anxiety that is too constant or too intense can cause a person to feel preoccupied, distracted, tense, and always on alert.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions. They affect people of all ages — including adults, children, and people in their teens. There are many different types of anxiety disorders, with different symptoms. They all have one thing in common, though: Anxiety occurs too often, is too strong, is out of proportion to the present situation, and affects a person’s daily life and happiness.

Symptoms of an anxiety disorder can come on suddenly, or they can build gradually and linger until a person begins to realize that something is wrong. Sometimes anxiety creates a sense of doom and foreboding that seems to come out of nowhere. It’s common for those with an anxiety disorder to not know what’s causing the emotions, worries, and sensations they have.

Different anxiety disorders are named to reflect their specific symptoms.

Generalized anxiety. With this common anxiety disorder, a person worries excessively about many things. Someone with generalized anxiety may worry excessively about school, the health or safety of family members, and the future. They may always think of the worst that could happen.

Along with the worry and dread, people with generalized anxiety have physical symptoms, such as chest pain, headache, tiredness, tight muscles, stomachaches, or vomiting. Generalized anxiety can lead a person to miss school or avoid social activities. With generalized anxiety, worries can feel like a burden, making life feel overwhelming or out of control.
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). For a person with OCD, anxiety takes the form of obsessions (bad thoughts) and compulsions (actions that try to relieve anxiety).
Phobias. These are intense fears of specific situations or things that are not actually dangerous, such as heights, dogs, or flying in an airplane. Phobias usually cause people to avoid the things they are afraid of.
Social phobia (social anxiety). This intense anxiety is triggered by social situations or speaking in front of others. An extreme form called selective mutism causes some kids and teens to be too fearful to talk at all in certain situations.
Panic attacks. These episodes of anxiety can occur for no apparent reason. With a panic attack, a person has sudden and intense physical symptoms that can include a pounding heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, numbness, or tingling feelings causes by overactivity of the body’s normal fear response. Agoraphobia is an intense fear of panic attacks that causes a person to avoid going anywhere a panic attack could possibly occur.
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This type of anxiety disorder results from a traumatic or terrifying past experience. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, or constant fear after the fact.
How Anxiety Disorders Affect People For people dealing with anxiety disorders, symptoms can feel strange and confusing at first. For some, the physical sensations can be strong and upsetting. For others, feelings of doom or fear that can happen for no apparent reason can make them feel scared, unprotected, and on guard. Constant worries can make a person feel overwhelmed by every little thing. All this can affect someone’s concentration, confidence, sleep, appetite, and outlook.

People with anxiety disorders might avoid talking about their worries, thinking that others might not understand. They may fear being unfairly judged, or considered weak or scared. Although anxiety disorders are common, people who have them may feel misunderstood or alone.

Some people with anxiety disorders might blame themselves. They may feel embarrassed or ashamed, or mistakenly think that anxiety is a weakness or a personal failing. Anxiety can keep people from going places or doing things they enjoy.

The good news is, doctors today understand anxiety disorders better than ever before and, with treatment, a person can feel better.

What Causes Anxiety Disorders?

Experts don’t know exactly what causes anxiety disorders. Several things seem to play a role, including genetics, brain biochemistry, an overactive fight-flight response, stressful life circumstances, and learned behavior.

Someone with a family member who has an anxiety disorder has a greater chance of developing one, too. This may be related to genes that can affect brain chemistry and the regulation of chemicals called neurotransmitters. But not everyone with a family member who has an anxiety disorder will develop problems with anxiety.

Things that happen in a person’s life can also set the stage for anxiety disorders. Frightening traumatic events that can lead to PTSD are a good example.

Growing up in a family where others are fearful or anxious can “teach” a child to view the world as a dangerous place. Likewise, if a person grows up in an environment that is actually dangerous (if there is violence in the child’s family or community, for example), he or she may learn to be fearful or expect the worst.

Although everyone experiences normal anxiety in certain situations, most people — even those who experience traumatic situations — don’t develop anxiety disorders. And people who develop anxiety disorders can get relief with proper treatment and care. They can learn ways to manage anxiety and to feel more relaxed and at peace.

How Are Anxiety Disorders Treated?

Anxiety disorders can be treated by mental health professionals, or therapists. A therapist can look at the symptoms someone is dealing with, diagnose the specific anxiety disorder, and create a plan to help the person get relief.

A particular type of talk therapy called cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) is often used. In CBT, a person learns new ways to think and act in situations that can cause anxiety, and to manage and deal with stress. The therapist provides support and guidance and teaches new coping skills, such as relaxation techniques or breathing exercises. Sometimes, but not always, medication is used as part of the treatment for anxiety.

What to Do Getting the problem treated can help a person feel like himself or herself again — relaxed and ready for the good things in life. Someone who might be dealing with an anxiety disorder should:
Tell a parent or other adult about physical sensations, worries, or fears. Because anxiety disorders don’t go away unless they are treated, it’s important to tell someone who can help. If a parent doesn’t seem to understand right away, talk to a school counselor, religious leader, or other trusted adult.
Get a checkup. See a doctor to make sure there are no physical conditions that could be causing symptoms.
Work with a mental health professional. Ask a doctor, nurse, or school counselor for a referral to someone who treats anxiety problems. Finding out what’s causing the symptoms can be a great relief.
Get regular exercise, good nutrition, and sleep. These provide your body and brain with the right fuel and time to recharge.

Try to stay patient and positive. It can take time to feel better, and courage to face fears. But letting go of worry allows space for more happiness and fun.

Adolescents, Especially Teenagers, Have Problems with Anxiety Too

Adults aren’t the only ones who suffer anxiety and panic attacks. In fact many teens are more susceptible to anxiety and panic attacks than most adults. With the pressures of academic achievement, biological changes stirring in the body, changes in their social life, adulthood approaching – compared to most adults, since they lack the skills that come with maturity, teens often have a harder time coping with many of the disturbing situations presented to them in today’s world.

Nearing The End of Schooldays

There are the teenagers who, nearing the end of their schooldays, have parents pressuring them to work harder so they make the grades needed to get into reputable colleges. Pushing them to work harder, some parents are even encouraging them to look to the future and start thinking about raising a family. Think about it, these pressures could be enough to drive some teens to doubt themselves, causing them sleepless nights and deep stirrings of apprehension.

Sometimes Anxiety is The Only Response

Although anxiety in teenagers is often a normal reaction to many of their day-to-day activities (going on dates, sitting for exams, meeting new people, competing in sports, performing on stage) there are some teens who experience anxiety in ways that others don’t. Like anxiety symptoms in children, teens can also experience severe anxiety just by thinking about situations that have yet to happen – and when they experience severe anxiety, these episodes often spark irrational fears that lead to terrifying panic attacks.

Disproportionate Reactions To Every-Day Events

Some teenagers have the tendency to react disproportionately to normal events and appear to be hyper sensitive. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re anxiety prone – but if you are concerned because you’ve noticed restlessness in your child, or loss of appetite, social withdrawal, difficulty concentrating, sudden bursts of anger, then set aside time to sit with them and have a quiet chat. Letting them know that you’re there for them, willing to support them no matter what’s going on in their lives, this can often be all they need.

When Is Too Much, Too Much?

Under normal circumstances, every teenager will feel anxious at times because of some specific thing happening in their lives. But keep in mind, there is an obvious difference between the every-day anxiety a healthy child will experience and the irrational debilitating anxiety that a child with an anxiety or panic attack disorder will experience. Often the teens filled with insecurities, low self-esteem and depression, instead of talking to their parents or sharing these fears with their peers, they will turn to external sources, and this is usually when drugs and alcohol and sexual promiscuity come into play – and then when the pressures continue to build, these same teens often find themselves doing whatever it takes to alleviate the anxiety, some even contemplating suicide.

Anxiety and Panic Attack Symptoms to Look For

In any given situation, one teenager’s reaction may be very different from another’s, hence there’s really no uniform set of symptoms. Nevertheless, most teens experiencing anxiety and panic attacks will show at least a few of the following signs: shortness of breath, chest pain, heart burn, hyperactivity, heart palpitations, smothering sensations, sweating or shivering, numbness in the head or face, stomach pains, and in extreme cases, the fear of going crazy.

Important to note: Some of the symptoms described above can be caused by medical, psychological, or physical conditions. Also they could be the effects of a current a medical condition or treatment, or the side effect of certain medications, or the body’s natural reaction to intense stimuli. Take this into consideration before jumping to conclusions, and if you still have doubts consult your doctor.

If you’re concerned about you teen’s behaviour and feel the need to better understand how anxiety and panic attacks can affect children and often cause unneccessary disruption yoiur the family, then please feel free to visit www.anxietysymptomschildren.com

After suffering anxiety and panic attacks through my teens and into my early twenties, I was living in New York making my living as a television actor when, for the first time, cast in my first a theatrical stage production, I was forced to face up to the fact that I had a serious disorder. Up until then I’d self medicate when the pressures became too much, using alcohol and prescription drugs to alleviate my insecurities, but having to go on stage in front of a live audience every night, that’s when I knew it was time to find a cure. Knowing now how disruptive anxiety and panic attack disorders can be, in the hope that it will help parents help their children, I have created a website that deals exclusively with understanding anxiety symptoms in children and teens. www.anxietysymptomschildren.com

Anxiety is a dreadful mental illness that can strike a person at anytime. In the world of today, there are already millions of people quietly suffering from it. This ailment is seemingly random in afflicting men, women and even children.

Luckily, a good selection of anxiety treatments can be made available for everyone. However this can vary for each group. Officially, only a medical professional is qualified to properly diagnose anxiety disorder.

Treatments For Men:

Treating men for anxiety is not easy because of the complexity in diagnosing anxiety in males. Their symptoms can imitate a heart attack or other heart related problems. Men will often not disclose the fact that they are having anxiety and, thus, will not look for treatment either.

For those men who do seek anxiety treatment, there is help on hand in the form of some type of therapy and prescription drugs. There are rarely any side effects in men who take prescribed drugs. Still, men who do endure anxiety disorders do not seek therapy as an anxiety treatment.

Treatments For Women:

Women who experience anxieties are given treatment differently. The compassion factor is quite higher than it is in men. Anxiety treatment for women includes therapy sessions and prescribing anti-depressant medications. Women are required to plan appointments, since the suicide rate for depression in women is much higher than it is for men.

But there are some side effects to anti-depressant medications as there are with any prescription medications. Women are recommended to refer to their doctor if they have any sort of symptoms when beginning new medications, no matter how inconsequential they think these symptoms are.

Treatments For Children:

Anxiety treatment is very strict when it comes to children. This is because studies have proven that anti-depressant medicines can in fact cause children to attempt suicide. Kids are required to seek therapy and are supervised closely.

Behavioral therapy may also be advocated for children. There are methods such as relaxation training and techniques of desensitization that have shown excellent effects in children. Anxiety treatments for children may also include a change in their dietary habit. Caffeine is totally removed from their diet because it is a excitant and studies have shown that it can provoke an attack.

Other medicines such as over the counter cold prescriptions such as diet pills, cough medicine and decongestants are a strict no-no because of the active ingredients that infringe on the effects of the anti-depressants.

Getting proper sleep is an excellent therapy to cure anxiety for all ages of people; but it is particularly vital for children. Studies have shown that when children have adequate sleep, they tend to be more peaceful, attentive and less likely to get an anxiety attack.

Summary:

Anxiety is a dreadful condition that can hit anyone at any point of time. It is random as it is reckless in troubling men, women and even children. But, the good news is that there is anxiety treatment present for everyone.
